Brandon Johnson (Business Management, 2021) didn’t have far to travel from his home in North London to study at King’s. But the entrepreneur has had a much more impressive journey as the CEO and founder of bootstrapped Serac Technologies - The fastest growing PropTech company in the UK…
Brandon shows a passion for learning and overcoming problems, and things that would frighten most young people and even experienced entrepreneurs including the complexities of planning permission, property contracts, import duties and more. For someone so switched on from a young age, Johnson has the name, charisma and confidence of someone who will soon become one of the UK’s most successful and well-known entrepreneurs, similar to Peter Jones, Richard Reed and Mark Pearson. What does the future hold for Johnson? With an interest in ethical sustainability, he hints at the potential of doing something to help the planet too, but also has dreams of running a large team, where people are passionate about what they do. He believes his work in property is not quite done yet and has aspirations to leave his “footprint on the London skyline” by adding his very own skyscraper to the city, claiming “if someone else can put a building like that up there, why can’t I?”What attracted you to study at King’s?Kings is a highly regarded university with a beautiful campus and competitive standards. The business course I wanted to do had an excellent reputation. I also wanted to stay in London. What’s your favourite memory of your time at King’s?I participated in a program that took me to Jakarta in Indonesia for seven days. It was an incredible experience. I remember withdrawing 1 million IDR – equivalent to about £50 in the UK – from the bank and being shocked! What’s the key skill or lesson you learnt at King’s?I learnt the importance of networking and collaborating with others based on their strengths. I also developed strong research skills, rather than just being taught.Tell us about your start-up business, Serac Tech…It began life while I was at King’s Business School. Since I was in school, I wanted to start my own business. I knew from a young age that this was the career path for me. I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. What sector does Serac Tech operate in?Serac Tech is the fastest growing PropTech company in the UK, having gone from three staff members to 51 in two years. We’re also ‘bootstrapped’, which means we are self-financed and we’ve never raised funds. We’ve relied entirely on our own capital and turnover. For those of us who don’t know, how do you launch a business?Start with a proof of concept and conduct a detailed viability study. Then invest in creating something tangible, such as designs or prototypes, to demonstrate feasibility before launching the business. Being able to launch while at King’s studying business management helped a lot.How is Serac Tech performing?Serac Tech has more than 120% year-on-year growth. The team has expanded from 12 to 51 in 18 months, with an increasing client base, including public limited companies. We continue to take on bigger responsibilities, which is very exciting.
I understand other King’s alumni are involved in Serac Tech…This was a happy coincidence. Key members such as Giulio Grassi, our Chief Technology Officer, Edoardo Ponaour, Head of Artificial Intelligence, and Shumeng Liu, a key member of the Tech Team, all attended King’s. Meeting them through friends of friends was crucial for the company's growth. What are your future plans for Serac Tech?We are working towards being the leading supplier of government enabled AI products. We’re developing tools to read and write planning applications.Do you have another start-up in the pipeline? We’ve recently launched Planda. This enables homeowners to understand property potential before purchasing. We have plenty of ideas for the future. Finally, what advice would you give to King’s students and alumni wanting to be entrepreneurs?Just do it! Start young because your mistakes and setbacks will be less expensive, and you won’t have as many responsibilities to take into consideration and distract you.
